What is CMEP?
The Colorado Medical Exemption Program is a special energy assistance program offered by Xcel Energy and overseen by the Chronic Care Collaborative. The program provides lower electric rates to Xcel Energy customers who meet specific medical qualifications.
Who can participate?
Xcel Energy customers can participate if they meet the following requirements:
How the program works:
Most electric customers pay higher rates in the summer. They are charged $0.046 for the first 500 kilowatt hours of electricity and $0.09 for electricity use over 500 kilowatt hours. This tiered rate can make summer bills much higher, largely if power use is over 830 kWh per month.
CMEP offers a rate of $0.063 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for all electricity used each month from June to September. The program not only lowers billing rates but also does not charge extra for using more electricity. Rates go back to standard rates October 1, 2017.
